random daily musings - named after the greatest band that never was

what a birthday present. the greatest 11 days of baseball ever, from the brink of elimination (where i had, i admit, lost hope) to the top of the proverbial mountain with a four game sweep and a championship. thank you pedro, curt, d-lo, oc, trot, billy, manny, papi, johnny, timmy, and the rest.

some musings about the game:
-why the hell is tim mccarver still doing color? he gets every other analysis wrong, even when presented with video evidence to the contrary.
-what were drew barrymore and jimmy fallon doing at the game in sox gear. i've always said i don't mind bandwagon fans...but aren't they from new york? (ok, so i heard that they were filming a movie about fanatical fans, based on the book "fever pitch" - but still. game 4? i'm surprised they didn't show up at game 7 in the bronx)
-why were the shots of red sox bars located in los angeles and...wait for it...new york city?!?
-why could i not stay awake for the whole game? i laid in bed, trying to make myself uncomfortable, but i still dozed off several times. maybe because nothing happened all game long after the third. at least it wasn't like last year when i slept through that painful moment where aaron fucking boone made himself persona non grata in new england.

ok, enough baseball. i'm on a good high that will last me until prince theo decides he won't resign pedro or d-lo, and then attempts to suture curt's ankle by himself. oh, and if pedro signs with you-know-who...guess who won't be BMH (baseball's most hated) anymore?

so i'm sure you all know what i'm going to write about, because you all know i'm obsessed. what are the two things i will absolutely not miss watching? maryland basketball and sox playoff baseball. picture this: me distraught, drinking my sorrows away on saturday night during homecoming festivities in college park. sunday i get nice, warm adrenaline rush that comes with a david ortiz walkoff home run, preserving a modicum of dignity for my favorite nation. then less than 24 hours later, pedro is pedro again and the "self proclaimed 'idiots'" get another walkoff win courtesy of big papi. tuesday we're back in the bronx, and foulke me sideways, it's going to game seven. now it's around midnight, bottom of the ninth, the score is 10-3 in our favor, and i'm still rocking back and forth like rain man on the edge of the couch. several breathless minutes later, i leap up silently (hey, it's late and people are sleeping) and raise my arms in the air - i'm pretty sure i pulled something. not that it matters. world series baby, saturday night in fenway. maybe later i can muse about the debacle that was my new job yesterday, but for now i can't focus on anything else. radical.

"It's the end of Game 2 and the Sox are down two games. I feel like there should still be hope but I just don't know if I have any left. It's like watching 'American Choppers.' It might be a different show every time, but you always know how it's gonna end."

yeah, except maybe tonight's episode will feature paulie welding senior's ass to a bike frame and mikey sitting on both and killing them. or the sox could win tonight. or there could be a rainout, and game five gets pushed to monday and pedro can pitch at fenway. if there is a game five.

look, i'm a pretty happy guy. i've got a good life, good friends, good family, good dog. so why is it that i want to either a) go spend a year in japan knowing no one and not speaking the language or b) go on a six month hike on the appalachian trail? maybe if my job didn't suck the freaking life out of me i would be able to answer myself.

if i don't post again before saturday, meet me by frankenstein. i hope to be there by noon.
