Sunday, February 29, 2004 week two of the sydney era is over. progress has been made on the training front: she's got "sit", "treat" and "no" down pretty well. housebreaking is a continual adventure, though she is beginning to understand that i get fairly bent out of shape when she cops a squat in the basement. once that gets covered, everything else will be gravy. ask anyone - this is my life right now. all syd, all the time. fortunately, i just got a job. not that i mind spending hour after hour with my girl, but i definitely need to get out of the house. so this job - it's back to res life, part II. yeah, the same job, appearing fifteen hours a week as the brains behind the stellar south campus duo that is bino and tyke. it's actually the best time of year to be there, with room selection coming up and all. i'm sure there will be alot of new faces, but when i worked with them three years ago, it was one of the best jobs i ever had, work environment-wise. as for money, i don't think there will be alot of it - though hopefully i can at least go back to my old rate, and not have to start over. i just saw the tiger woods/caddyshack commercial, and it was hilarious. it also reminded me of the jimmy brown commemorative wheel of fortune dancing gopher which was unceremoniously stolen during an allegany party. speaking of word games, i won a free dinner from balsley the other night by trouncing him at his own word game. he and michael insisted that there was no way i could guess the word without using pen/paper under a time limit of twenty minutes. the game involves eric picking a five letter word with no repeating letters: i could guess any five letter word, no repeats and eric would tell me the number of letters that coincided. if the word was "candy" and i guessed "drown", eric would say "one". the word wasn't that easy. rearrange "jdrof" and you'll have it. what up, g, can't handle it? yeah, i've been writing this entry very sporadically for the last hour, and now i'm tired. maybe tomorrow i'll reflect on how hard it was to root for the hated dukies, even though the seminole loss was good for our tourney chances. and cuse beat pitt at pitt - nice. too bad the terps and uri both lost on saturday. at least the weather this weekend was fantastic. posted by johnny | 2/29/2004 11:12:00 PM Wednesday, February 25, 2004 it's on, baby! tourneychallenge.net register early and get a prize! also...my girl marianela was in the january issue of fhm (by "my girl" i mean my freshman dining hall girl, who i used to talk to in the grill line, right before she would sit with steve francis) also, part deux...joy's blog is great. i might not have an unbiased opinion, but i would venture to say that it might even be a better read than the crap i've been putting out lately. if only i could get her to link back to my blog... one more link...the spongemonkeys before they sold out to quizno's...we like the moon posted by johnny | 2/25/2004 03:59:00 AM Tuesday, February 24, 2004 what everyone's been waiting for - pictures of sydney... before i start some classic gumbling, i need to say this - happy birthday, lena! you know you're my favorite (don't tell the other girls)... anyways, i was wasting some time on the net - shocker - and i stumbled upon an editorial in the frederick news-post which i found particularly irritating. it was a slam on terp fans for supposed "hoolinganism", comparing us to european soccer fans, etc. not only is this opinion piece weeks late, (remember the blow up following the duke game? and my subsequent rant?) it contained in several inaccuracies, most notably the throwing of a "glass" bottle (it was plastic, as glass is not allowed into the arena). without going into more detail on how the fnp is moronic, i'll just quote a line from the editorial: "When, for example, did it become OK for fans to create as much noise, confusion and distraction as possible during free throws? What is the point of adding this moronic, anti-sport element to the challenge of making a free throw?" obviously they have never attended a sporting event in their entire lives as they completely do not comprehend the idea of "home court advantage". seriously, not to bash frederick itself, but these are the people who elect bartlett to congress. roscoe, not josiah, you west wing junkies... posted by johnny | 2/24/2004 07:04:00 AM Sunday, February 22, 2004 so i shouldn't be blogging while watching the duke game, but it can't be helped. i knew we were going to get waxed, but i forgot how heartbreaking it could be. in the first half we were showing some promise, but then the refs started killing us with some poor calls, like a missed foul on a ncm three and a blown offensive goaltending call on jamar. then we started to fall apart, beginning with gary playing mcray at the point. and everyone started sucking. hard. i could complain about the officials allowing duke to slap at our guards, enabling them to create thirteen steals in the first half, but we just blew it. this team doesn't really know how to play together, and has some glaring weakness, e.g., a lack of a competent backup point guard and some piss poor free throw shooting. and now the game is over, and while i'm not heartbroken, i'm certainly worried about our chances at the big dance. we need to win four of our final four games to be a lock, three of four to be safe, two of four to have a shot, and one or none and we're done. speaking of the tournament, as i write this, justin is setting up the site - i can't confirm the address just yet, but hope to within the next 48 hours. like i say every year, this one will be bigger and better than ever! man, that sounded lame, but it is so true. get ready... posted by johnny | 2/22/2004 06:54:00 PM Friday, February 20, 2004 another update for those of you who know joy...she started her own blog, partialy due to my persistence. the link to dawsonontherun is in the links section on the right... posted by johnny | 2/20/2004 04:04:00 PM Wednesday, February 18, 2004 so joy turned me on to friendster, and in the brief period i have been involved, it is kind of sweet. it's a bizarre six degrees of seperation slash passive online stalking game. if anyone else does it, let me know - i need some friends, otherwise i look kind of lame. as for something completely nerdy - flight of the navigator is coming out on dvd. silly. also, sydney is awesome. except when she's coming up with new ways to escape her pen... posted by johnny | 2/18/2004 04:40:00 PM Monday, February 16, 2004 before i start in on some good news, i would like to gripe about a certain sports issue. the yankees blow. i hate them more than i hate any other team, more than the cowboys, more than duke basketball. and now they fucking stole arod from the rangers for shitty soriano? what the hell. you don't trade away the best player in baseball for some overhyped strikeout artist. soriano has a two year contract - don't think he'll bounce out of arlington the second that thing expires. plus, john hart is going to be paying 67 out of the remaining 179 mil on a-fucking-rod's contract. that's almost 10 million a year for the next 7 years. steinbrenner basically made tom hicks his little bitch and whored the rest of the league in the process. as for "the best player in baseball"? i hope he dies of gonorrhea and rots in hell. no, seriously. i would be satisfied with a nomar shot down the line hitting him in his busted faccia. or maybe his wife cheats on him with david wells. that would be awesome. on a good sports related note, duke lost to state in raleigh - it's good to see everyone in the acc is losing to those zone playing backdoor pansies. sorry...i'm a little fired up. now the good news. i got a puppy. her name is sydney, and she is a golden retriever. and she is beautiful. she is three months old and is terrific. i'm actually having trouble trying to describe her in words, so basically you all have to come see her for yourself. i can tell you fun little stories that might actually be boring, but they're fun for me. so i tried to build her an area that i could leave her in while i go to class, but she climbed one of the couches feline-style and curled up on the cushions. i guess i need taller walls. and she didn't bark all day, until she saw herself in the mirror about an hour ago and let out the most feeble bark i have ever heard. i am so tempted to let her sleep in bed with me, but that's not good for her training. she only whimpers for a little while and then goes to sleep anyways. speaking of training, "sit" and "come" are coming along nicely, as is learning her name. i'm having trouble not automatically calling her zoey or phoebe. that's all for now. i'm sure syd will provide some good blogging antics in the week to come... posted by johnny | 2/16/2004 11:19:00 PM Saturday, February 14, 2004 boondock saints - just watched it for the first time, and now i'm obsessed. there's a sequel coming out in 2004... posted by johnny | 2/14/2004 01:19:00 PM Wednesday, February 11, 2004 i know i promised to not talk about this, but you know me... justin says we need a new name for the tourney challenge, "preferably something without terps/ terrapins/maryland in it because of all the heat i'll receive here in the 'cuse". i'm finding it vaguely blasphemous to avoid all terp-centric names simply because of a one year layover up north. also, this will be the third name in as many years. last of all, the "heat"? please, you guys could use some freaking heat in that frozen tundra you call home. but i guess we might as well alter it, since we have to change the web address anyways. besides, justin does most of the work anyways - i'm just the pretty face who brings in the customers. does anyone have any brilliant ideas? posted by johnny | 2/11/2004 01:46:00 PM i meant to post this before, but i forgot. joy is in chile now, and if you want to send her anything, here is her address: joy dawson 5 norte 1096 edificio florencia dpto. 201 vina del mar, chile i'm sure she'll say not to send her anything, and will be mad that i even posted this, but everyone always likes getting things in the mail... posted by johnny | 2/11/2004 08:59:00 AM just came back from the gym, and my body (specifically my arms) is pissed at me. i guess that's what happens when you don't lift for...let's say "years". anyways, it should be constructive. balsley thinks that that we wil be going every mon-wed-fri at 7. actually, we were supposed to start last friday, and you can guess how that went. i guess i'll have to start waking him up, instead of the other way around. the past weekend was decent, i guess. saturday night was segregated into three random parts: micah (i know!) and ariel came over for beer pong and left, then kim came over and watched snl and left, then kyle came downstairs and watched l'auberge espagnole and left - or at least went back upstairs. anyone who has ever studied abroad should see this movie. in fact, anyone who doesn't have an extreme aversion to subtitled movies (you know who you are, you freaking losers) should see this movie. sunday i watched the terps win their second game in a row - i guess this is what stands for a "streak" these days. the acc is full of stud teams this year, and we'll be lucky to get out with a .500 conference record. if we win out our home games (and that's a big "if" seeing that wake and tech still have to come to town) we should be a lock for the tournament. speaking of tournament...no, i shouldn't even say yet...everyone already knows what i'm talking about. besides, once we're ready, you'll never hear the end of it. will the QA curse hold true, even though the hallowed building is in the process of being gutted, looking like a mere shadow of it's former self? speaking of which, i would like to know what happened to the midget door. it has no real value as an actual door, so i'm sure it was trashed somewhere. but the memories.... posted by johnny | 2/11/2004 08:53:00 AM Friday, February 06, 2004 did anyone see the duke - carolina game last night? i missed a good portion of it due to the fact that the deuce cut away from it 30 minutes into the action. jefferson pilot was also covering the showdown, but i didn't find out that it was on channel 20 until about midway through the second half. anyways, it was a classic. i was seriously torn between my traditional rooting against duke, and the idea that if the tar heels lost, they would be tied with us in the acc standings. but of course, the blue devils won on a last second overtime drive to the basket by duhon. there was some hot "no means no" jeers directed at shelden from the carolina faithful. that's our problem - our cheers aren't really offensive, they're just obscene. why drop the f bomb when you can yell at an alleged rapist? or a mama's boy who still has his food cut for him?. we could be way more hostile if the fans did a little research and chanted seemingly innocous words that are just plain mean. i am also sick of hearing how carlos boozer's mom got hit with a bottle. i was there. she was giving us the finger and smacking her ass at the student section (i'm not condoning the bottle throwing, but no one talks about how the fucking parents incited the fans). i had to be held back by molly or i really was going to throw something myself. so a little anger invades my normally pretty happy blog. what it does remind me of is that it is currently the month of february. which precedes march. and what happens in march? you know...and if you don't know, i'll give you some clues. "small scale rick neuheisel controversy" "which treat, phoebe?" "johnny accepts credit cards?" justin has told me he has come up with some new tricks for this year's edition, including some theme-oriented programming. which will be enfuego. now i'm pumped. get ready for some pestering... posted by johnny | 2/06/2004 10:18:00 AM Thursday, February 05, 2004 fun story...apparently i didn't pay some portion of the money i owe the university, so they dropped me from all my classes. i spent all morning talking to the bursar to remove my financial block, then to the ensp office because there was an advising block, then to two professors because two of my classes were full so i needed to be oversubscribed. high-larious. but it's all taken care of now. back to reading about shelters on the at... posted by johnny | 2/05/2004 03:51:00 PM Wednesday, February 04, 2004 easy links for those of you who live in maryland, and want to do your civic duty... register to vote by feb 10th get an absentee ballot the date of the maryland presidential primary is march 2nd... posted by johnny | 2/04/2004 08:12:00 AM Tuesday, February 03, 2004 ok...so i just reread a walk in the woods for about the hundredth time. every time i complete it, i am filled with the need and the urgency to thru-hike the trail. my wheels started turning, and i thought, "when would there be a better time to hike the at?" now i know school ends too late for me to start at springer mountain, and i have never thought hiking southbound was a great idea, but doing a flip flop hike seems hugely possible. i am out of shape compared to my backpacking days, but i think i could get back into at least reasonable condition by this spring. does anyone think i'm crazy? would anyone like to train with me? most importantly, does anyone want to do the trail with me? posted by johnny | 2/03/2004 10:45:00 AM Monday, February 02, 2004 "is the darkness act real? because then they're weird and creepy. but if it's schtick, then it's brilliant." thank you best week ever... posted by johnny | 2/02/2004 06:32:00 PM |
