friday, march 21st

got in the van - all suped up including eric's tv and the playstation 2. our plan is to pass the time while not driving by playing video games and watching the tourney. mike and eric play blitz all the way out of the metro area, until we stop at kfc for some dinner and to let eric start driving. i then attempt to play gta 3 - which is apparently not a good idea. i don't get motion sickness. i used to read books lying upside down in the old astro van when i was a kid. stealing cars in liberty city, however, nearly do me in, compounded by the fact that whenever i got nauseous, i paused the game for about 30 seconds, then resumed playing. pretty much the closest i have come to puking in a car while sober. anyways, i give up on the playstation and proceed to try and watch some ball, at which point eric's tv decides to hate me. randomly turning on and off does not equate a functional tv. so i give up and take a nap.

our plan was to catch the terps game at this bar in fayetteville, nc i found on the internet called ITZ. of course i assumed that we would easily be able to find this place off 95 south. not so. our first set of directions came from mike's cell phone service and involved getting on and off the highway about eight times. veto. the second set came from the recording for the bar, but sadly did not involve any major highways (say, for example, the interstate running through the freaking town!). the third try, we spoke to an actual guy working at the bar. his directions seemed relatively simple, included landmarks, and actually came live from someone who appeared to have intelligence. halfway through the directions we were to cross a small bridge then take a right at the light. upon further analysis, however, said bridge was closed. not just closed, mind you, but virtually blown up. we briefly toyed with jumping the small creek, a la Road Trip, but that idea was squashed. we then decided, as men, that we could find this hellhole without support. and we did, without any further trouble or concern. what the hell. actual directions, i.e. those i would have given to a human being, involved getting off 95, driving for about 5 miles on ONE road, then turning off and finding the ITZ less than 50 yards away. instead we were instructed to follow a Rube Goldberg-like set of twists and turns. but i digress.

we discover the bar is really four bars in one - sports bar, cigar bar, dance club...and something else which could have been a strip club. off topic - fayetteville is lousy with strip clubs. really. there must a city ordinance demanding at least one strip club and two erotica stores on every block. i guess all those soldiers at fort bragg get horny. go there and see for yourself. anyways, the sports bar at ITZ is filled with ridiculous characters, from the army types, to the stripper types, to the old guy types. one waitress had huge boobs which perched perfectly on her chest like curvy traffic cones - surprisingly not attractive in the least. all we wanted to do was watch the terps on tv, while our russian waitress kept pestering us. and the game was not going well. i was all set to drive on to miami in a post loss funk when, of course, drew hit the shot. which made us idiotically happy. we decided that, for the rest of the trip, that if we were disgruntled or disagreeable in any way, we would just think about that shot and be instantly happy.

post game, it was after midnight and we still had 12 more hours to drive. this will be the only day that ends at this time, mark my words...
